Based in London, Ian Johnston is managing partner of culture shaping in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, for Senn Delaney, the culture-shaping division of Heidrick & Struggles. He has been a senior leader of culture shaping in the EMEA region for the past 15 years, most recently serving as partner until being named managing partner in 2017.


Well known for enabling CEOs to lead with vitality, vision and clear purpose, Ian works with clients to ensure that their organizations are strategically viewing culture in times of uncertainty. He is focused on accelerating and expanding culture shaping work for clients across the region. This supports their strategies for profitable growth and helps Heidrick & Struggles to deliver superior value to clients through the combined impact of our advisory services.


Ian has worked closely with CEOs, senior executives and their teams across a broad range of industry sectors. He has worked in more than 35 countries in the last 10 years helping clients to shape consistent cultures at both the global and local levels. Ian brings an eclectic mix of business experience, an adventurer's spirit, a coaching and learning mindset and a fascination with the scale and complexity of multinational companies to his work.


He has significant experience strengthening leadership and organizational culture in large international businesses. Ian has been instrumental in improving the spirit and performance of numerous clients. These include Telkom SA, Rolls Royce, Proximus (formerly Belgacom), GlaxoSmithKline, UK Power Networks, Shell, the Saudi Telecom Company, Anglo American and Hutchinson Whampoa. Ian is a frequent speaker at executive conferences and events.


Ian has been at the forefront of the development of experiential learning techniques for senior leaders and executives over the last 30 years. Prior to joining Senn Delaney, Ian had more than 20 years of diverse business experience. He taught at Templeton College, Oxford. He also founded and led a successful UK consulting practice, devising and leading large-scale leadership and culture-shaping engagements.


Ian is a graduate of Liverpool John Moores University. He lives with his wife and three children in Cheltenham, UK. He enjoys sailing and skiing with his family and has a life-long love of the outdoors. He has been on mountaineering trips to the Antarctic and the Himalaya s.
